Arkansas Arts Center is in MacArthur Park at 9th and Commerce sts. The center contains nine galleries, a children's theater, a museum school and a decorative arts museum. Permanent exhibits include American and European paintings, drawings and sculpture from the 16th century to the present.

Arkansas State Capitol is on W. Capitol Ave. Made of Arkansas white marble and granite, the building is patterned after the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C. An information desk is on the first floor. Exhibits include a mineral display; videotape programs are available.

Historic Arkansas Museum

Historic Arkansas Museum is at 200 E. Third St. at Cumberland St.; from I-30 take exit 141. Of the five restored early-19th-century buildings, four are open to the public. Among the offerings in the 51,000-square-foot museum are galleries devoted to a collection of items by artists and artisans of Arkansas, a contemporary Arkansas Artists' Gallery and a Children's Hands-on Gallery. This is the main center of interpretation about the state's frontier period.

Little Rock Zoo is off I-630 exit 4 at 1 Jonesboro Dr. The zoo displays more than 600 native and exotic animals on 40 acres. Highlights include ape, big cat and tropical rain forest exhibits.
Pets are not permitted. The 1924 Arkansas Carousel, a rare over-the-jumps antiquity, has been restored as the centerpiece of the zoo's visitor center.

Old State House Museum

Old State House Museum is at 300 W. Markham at Center St. One of the finest examples of Doric architecture in the South, the house includes two chambers once used by the state legislature and supreme court. Designed by Gideon Shryock, it was begun in 1833 and completed in 1842; additions were made in 1885. When Arkansas became a state in 1836, the building served as the capitol. Displayed are items of state historical interest.

Woodruff Print Shop

Woodruff Print Shop is in the Historic Arkansas Museum at 200 E. Third St. The site includes a house built in 1824 by William E. Woodruff, founder of the Arkansas Gazette, the oldest newspaper west of the Mississippi River. A reproduction 1820s print shop includes original furniture and a replica of the press Woodruff rafted up the Arkansas River.

Museum of Discovery is at 500 President Clinton Ave., Suite 150, in the historic riverfront district. Science and history displays are featured in such exhibit areas as Bug Zoo, Arkansas Indians, Passport to the World, Health Hall, Imagination Station, World of the Forest and Zoom Zone. Changing exhibits also are offered.
